Is the African Symbol Gye Nyame A Spiral Galaxy?

Indigenous to the Akan people of Ghana, West Africa, the Gye Nyame symbol is one of their highest spiritual symbols collectively known as Adinkra Symbol.

The symbol dates as far back as before the 17th century current era. It is a symbol with many  interpretations; “EXCEPT FOR GOD” which signifies the all-knowing power of God or the omnipotence of God. Gye Nyame also means that one recognizes that God is omnipotent and omnipresent, and that God is above all.

Another translation of the Gye Nyame symbol is: “No one lives who saw its beginning, and no one will live to see its end, EXCEPT GOD”

While the Adinkra symbols do more than prove the Akan people had a writing system of their own that transmitted highly sophisticated cultural and spiritual ideas, values and concepts. Could the shape of the Gye Nyame symbol prove that the Akan People also had an advanced knowledge of astronomy and astro-physic ?

A closer look at the Gye Nyame symbol has a striking resemblance to the Barred Galaxy.

Is this the origin of Gye Nyame? (Galaxy NGC 1300)

According to Wikipedia,A barred spiral galaxy is a spiral galaxy with a central bar-shaped structure composed of stars. Bars are found in approximately two-thirds of all spiral galaxies.[1] Bars generally affect both the motions of stars and interstellar gas within spiral galaxies and can affect spiral armsas well.[1]

In 2005, observations by the Spitzer Space Telescope backed up previously collected evidence that suggested the Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy. Observations by radio telescopes had for years suggested our galaxy to be barred, but Spitzer’s vision in the infrared region of the spectrum has provided a more definite calculation. “

In many cultures and religions, the galaxy and our solar system point to God.“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (NIV). This beautiful statement from Psalm 19:1 (NIV)  captures the wonder and awe people felt when they stared at the universe, as it reveals the majesty of its Creator.

Were the Akan people of Ghana also trying to capture the awesomeness of the heavens depicted in the Gye Nyame symbol, which is translated as EXCEPT FOR GOD?

We may not prove the Bar galaxy is what the Akan people of Ghana, Africa, were trying to depict in the beautiful Gye Nyame Adinkra Symbol admired by many artists all over the world, however, the resemblance is too striking to ignore and may call for further research.
